In Memoriam
April 10, 1963
Dear Thresher Family,
Here is some important news. On 12/18/2001, I received an e-mail from
Max Monningh who found a Thresher relic being sold at E-Bay, the internet
auction place. I wrote to the seller and told him who I was, and how important
that relic might be for all of us. Here is his kind response:
First message:
Ms. Arsenault, When I listed this artifact for sale I had
no idea of its importance. However, once I learned of how important it
was to the Submarine service members, Surviving family members and ex crew
members I immediately cancelled all bids and removed it from ebay auctions.
I'm sorry, but, I had no idea of what this item meant to so many people.
I meant no disrespect for the men who were lost or the surviving family
members. I do apologize for my lack of insight. I can see now
that it was an inappropriate item to put up for sale. I am now in
the process of donating it to a Naval museum and happy to do so. The one
good thing that came of this is that the item came to light after many
years and will now be returned to its proper place.
Just today, 12/20/2001, I received this message from Mr. Cairns: I'm happy to report to you that I have made arrangements this AM to
send the USS Thresher Marker Buoy Label to the Curator at the Naval Historic
Center in Washington D.C. I was told that this item needed to go through
proper channels and this is the first place it will go. It will then be
available to other museums within the system, including the Submarine Force
Museum in New London. I have no idea about a time schedule, etc.,
when the item will be available for public viewing. That will be up to
the museums. I will send to you via email a couple of images of this Buoy
Label.

Mr. Cairns sent me the images as he promised, and I have placed them here on this site. If you would like to see them, click on the links below.
I would mostly like to extend heartfelt thanks to Mr. Cairns for giving us this opportunity.
Speaking of kindness to our families, I would like to mention that the domain name to reach this site, ussthresher.com, was given to us as a gift by the previous owner Intercosmos Media Group who had it up for sale.
To see the photos from Mr. Cairns, simply click on each of the links below. If any of you have other photos that belong here, I will be glad to place them at this site, linked in the same way.
Many best wishes,
Lori
